    Pocket Multimeters

Pocket Multimeters are handheld devices that can be kept in your pocket that are able to measure electrical values including voltage (volts), current (amps) and resistance (ohms) in electrical components and circuits. Pocket Multimeters are essential small measuring instruments for any engineers or technician's toolbox who need to take measurements, test, or repair equipment in electrical or electronic industries. Pocket digital multimeters (DMM) are also popular for use within the home.

Pocket multimeters are extremely easy and convenient to carry around with you and can give you all the measurements you require. These battery powered devices are great for continuity and portability and usually have an LCD display where the measurement readouts can be viewed.

RS have a great range of high quality handheld multimeters from leading brands such as Aim-TTi, Amprobe, Beha-Amprobe, BK Precision, Chauvin Arnoux, FLIR, Fluke, Gossen Metrawatt, Keysight Technologies, RS PRO and many more.

    What do multimeters do?

Multimeters check the electrical resistance within a circuit. A digital pocket multimeter is a great tool for testing, diagnosing, and troubleshooting electrical circuits, components and devices and are essential to electronic engineers and electricians

    Most common checks include:

    • AC voltage or DC voltage
    • AC current or DC current
    • Resistance
    • Continuity of electrical components
    • Temperature
    • Some advance models may measure frequency and have True RMS voltage and current readings

    Using Pocket and Handheld Multimeters:

    • Select the Mode - choose the measurement mode for your task (voltage, current, resistance, etc.).
    • Range Selection - for manual-ranging multimeters, select the appropriate measurement range.
    • Connect the Probes to the test points.
    • Read the Display - either digital display or read the pointer position on the analogue scale.
    • Continuity and Diode Testing - this function is useful for checking circuit continuity and diode polarity.
    • Always follow safety precautions

Key Considerations Before Purchasing a Multimeter

    • Measurement Requirements - determine the parameters you frequently measure to choose a multimeter with the appropriate features.
    • Accuracy - look for multimeters with high accuracy specifications for reliable measurements.
    • Build Quality - choose a durable and sturdy multimeter that can withstand your working environment.
    • Features - consider the features you need, such as data logging, auto-ranging, and specialised measurement modes.
