A 2018 report by The Unilever Foundry found that 4 in 10 female founders frequently encountered gender bias whilst running their startups and 42% believed that the same gender discrimination would continue as they attempted to scale up their business. This suggests that there are cultural barriers playing a large part of the issue, with women not being supported or encouraged to enter into entrepreneurship in the same way as their male peers. Further barriers include women often not being able to secure venture capital funding and even being denied business loans.
There are many benefits to supporting women entrepreneurs and actively trying to help close the gender gap, with other reports suggesting that it could boost global GDP by as much as 2%.

Fortunately, there are steps being made to understand and tackle the barriers facing women entrepreneurs which is already making a difference. It is clear to see that female entrepreneurship is continuing on a global upward trend, with the hope that one day the entrepreneurial gender gap will be closed indefinitely – but which countries will continue to lead the way in years to come?
