What's an Inverter Drive?

Inverter drives, also commonly known as AC drives, Variable Frequency Drives (VFD's), or Adjustable Speed Drives (ASD's), are a type of electrical device which is used to manage the speed or torque of an electric motor. These devices typically sit between the motor and electrical supply, and will control the power which is sent to the motor. You can adjust the speed of the motor by gradually increasing or decreasing the power fed to the inverter drive, allowing for greater energy efficiency. Power can be gradually supplied to a motor during start-up, for example.
