Bastard cut refers to the coarseness of the file, other types include second cut and smooth cut. Files with a bastard cut feature teeth that are coarse allowing for rapid removal of stock material whilst still producing a relatively smooth finish.

Like many of types of files, half-round files are designed to be used with a forward or push stroke, using steady, even and long strokes. Filing too quickly and aggressively can damage the material you're working with.
