They are used for applications where a nut or bolt needs to be tightened to prevent the fastener from loosening or to distribute the load evenly from the nut or bolt head over a larger area. Additionally, they can also serve as a spacer through the fastener before driving it into the surface or object, which in turn creates an additional surface which prevents the fastener from going too deep.
