    DIN Connectors

    DIN Connectors are an electrical connector that is identified by its DIN standard. DIN was created by the German national standards organisation and stands for Deutsches Institut fur Normung. As there are different variations of DIN connectors available, there are also a variety of DIN standards for these connectors such as DIN 41524 which is used for digital and audio signals.

    How to identify DIN connectors?

    DIN Connectors are identified by its round shape that encompasses a circular pattern of pins within the connector. These connector types are offered in both male and female types.

    Where are DIN connectors used?

    DIN connectors are widely used for equipment such as MIDI instruments, Computer keyboards, as well as other specialised equipment.

    Another type of DIN connector is a Mini Din. These are smaller in size except the pins are arranged horizontally. These are used for S-video connections, PS2 mouse and keyboards.

    Types of DIN Connectors

    There are several DIN type connectors available such as;

    • 5-pin DIN Connectors - These connectors have an arrangement of 5 pins circular pattern and are widely used for older computer keyboards.
    • S-Video connectors - These have 4 pins arranged in 2 rows and a keying block so that it cannot be inserted incorrectly.
    • PS/2 connectors - These connection types have 6 pins and a keying block. This connector has become an industry standard for connecting mice and keyboards although was first used on PS2 consoles.
    • 8-pin Mini Din - These connectors have 3 pins at the top and bottom and 2 in the middle. They are commonly used on portable video devices and projectors.
    • Environmentally sealed connectors - These DIN type connectors have been designed for cable to cable, cable to board and cable to device applications. They are primarily used in harsh environments.
