Use this pneumatic piston rod cylinder from Festo to handle the ups and downs of automation. It has a double-acting mechanism, so it can control movement on the outward and inward strokes. This makes it handy for lifting and lowering as well as pushing and pulling tasks. The modular design means you can mount it with flanges and footings and add clamping and coupling accessories. The rod gives you a stroke length of 160mm, to enable precise picking and placing tasks. As the end is threaded, it's easy to screw on and change accessories such as clamps.

You can detect the position of the rod on this pneumatic cylinder with a proximity switch (121-5836). This slides into the slots on the cylinder body and fastens tight using the screw on the sensor, so it's quick to fit.
