    What's a Pneumatic Silencer?

When gas or air builds up in a compressed air system it needs to be safely vented to avoid damaging equipment. This process can be loud, and that's where a silencer comes in handy. A pneumatic silencer is a device which reduces the noise created when releasing pressurised air. They're often used in environments where it's vitally important to reduce noise levels, such as industrial areas where equipment is in close proximity to people.

How does a Pneumatic Silencer work?

This type of silencer is usually made up of one or more chambers, through which the pressurised air is directed. These chambers allows the fast-moving air to expand gradually, reducing its velocity and making it quieter and less turbulent. Porous materials such as foam or sintered metal are sometimes also used to further absorb sounds waves. The air is then safely expelled to the atmosphere.

What's the difference between a Pneumatic Silencer and a Pneumatic Muffler?

Both mufflers and silencers reduce noise levels of pneumatic equipment and these terms are often used interchangeably, although there are some differences. Mufflers are designed to dampen sounds caused by air flow in a pneumatic system, whilst pneumatic silencers are a more specific type of muffler. Silencers minimise the noise created from venting pressurised air.

Norgren's range at RS includes series such as the T20, T40, MB, and M/S. You can choose from units made of durable materials with porous properties such as plastic, brass, aluminium and bronze. Many of their silencers have a compact design and are lightweight to easily fit into your set-up. Some can be screwed directly into the exhaust port for quick installation, such as the M/S and T40 series. MA and MB series units are an ideal choice if you want high-flow capacity for heavy duty usage. They come with a brash mesh screen construction, cleanable element, and ensure improved flow and a longer life-span.
