What are SPD's used for?
To protect your electrical devices from voltage surges or spikes, surge arrestors and surge protectors can be used. The two types of SPD are similar, but they do have some differences:- Surge Protector: A surge protector, also referred to as a surge suppressor, is designed to protect electronic devices from smaller and more frequent voltage spikes. Many factors can cause these spikes, like switching electrical loads or power grid fluctuations. A surge protector limits the voltage to a safe level by absorbing the excess energy through its suppression components. ABB surge protectors can be used to provide localised protection through outlets or with individual electronic devices.
- Surge Arrestor: Surge arrestors, also referred to as lightning arrester or a surge diverter, diverts high-voltage surges away from electrical systems that are too sensitive to withstand the high voltage currents. These high-voltage surges can be caused by lightning strikes, for example, and the surge arrestor would be able to effectively redirect the voltage to the ground, preventing damage. To instal a surge arrestor, they tend to be located where the power enters the facility.
