    ABB MCCBs

    How does an MCCB work?

    An MCCB typically contains two main mechanisms: thermal and electromagnetic.

    Electromagnetic Tripping

    If there is a high overcurrent or short-circuit, the electromagnetic trip mechanism within the MCCB generate a magnetic field that is proportional to the current that passes through the breaker. As a result, the contacts rapidly open and disconnect the circuit, stopping the current flow.

    Thermal Tripping

    In the event of overloads, the thermal trip mechanism responds to the heat that is caused by excessive current flow. The thermal element, or bimetallic strip, within the MCCB heats up because of the current passing through. Once the temperature reaches the predetermined threshold, the strip deforms, further activating the trip mechanism which opens the contacts and interrupts the circuit.

    MCCBs can be manually reset to restore the power within the circuit, or automatically rest if it features automatic mechanisms.

    What is the difference between an MCB and an MCCB?

    MCBs are miniature circuit breakers which tend to have lower breaking capabilities, where they effectively interrupt low to moderate faults in current, typically found in light commercial or residential applications. Whereas MCCBs have higher breaking capabilities as they are designed to interrupt higher levels of current (dependent upon current rating). This means that MCCBs are associated more with larger industrial installation and electrical systems.
