USB Hubs

USB hubs are a piece of hardware that features several USB (Universal Serial Bus) ports. Through expanding the number of USB ports, more than one USB application can be plugged in at one time when connected to a host system or device.

What is a USB Hub used for?
• A good example of where a USB Hub can be used, is with a computer. Many desktop computers feature two or three built-in ports, but more often than not there is not enough ports to support the peripherals that a user needs. With a computer, a user may need use of a mouse, keyboard, printer, microphone and a webcam. To use all of these applications at one time, a hub is the perfect solution. It acts as an adapter, a user simply needs to connect the USB cable from the given application into the Hub which will then allow all of the functions to work simultaneously.
• A Hub is useful for charging a large number of devices at the same time, a powered USB Hub removes the need for a computer.

Benefits of using a Hub
• Some Hubs are portable allowing a user to take it with them wherever they may need to use more than one cable/device at one time.
• Most are "plug and play" and require no additional set up
• Some are multi-port, allowing different types of cable to be used at one time
• Our range features 2, 3, 4 ports for USB. The range also proudly features 7-port, 10 and 13 with new Hubs being added to the range regularly.
• The choice of USB-A and USB-C.

Hub applications
The number of peripherals made is constantly growing with USB versions. Below is just a handful of common USB devices that are available today.
• Storage devices, Network connections, Video phones, Mobile or telephones, Speakers, Modems, Digital Cameras, Joysticks, Scanners, USB Flash drives, HDMI, Wi-Fi and a laptop.

Powered USB Hub or Unpowered USB Hub?
USB hubs can be powered or unpowered. Most consumer hubs are small units and tend to be unpowered, using the power of the computer that they are plugged in to. If lots of self-powered devices are connected (such as printers or scanners) an unpowered model would be sufficient. Depending on the application, you may find that you want a powered USB to manage multiple unpowered devices. A powered hub ensures that the computer’s power supply does not become overloaded.

RS Components feature a generous range of USB Hubs, supplied by leading brands such as HAMA, Startech, D-Link and of course our trusted own brand RS Pro.
