    Gaskets & O-Rings

Gaskets and O-rings are used to join two parts of a machine, engine or another often mechanical assembly by filling the space between both parts, creating a filled and sealed space in between. This seal prevents particle, vapour and fluid ingress or leakage to protect and maintain the joint or pressure whilst keeps debris out, ensuring proper function and safety. Gaskets and O-rings are used in various fields and industries including automotive, aerospace and general engineering.RS supply a great range of gaskets and seals including nitrile O-rings which have a great resistance to abrasion and can be used for various sealing applications. Our nitrile O-rings are available in both metric and imperial standard sizes. Imperial sizes are usually to BS1806 and Metric sizes are to BS4518. You can see more in our seals and o-rings guide.

How do gaskets and O-rings work?

A gasket or O-ring is seated between two parts, often in a groove in one of the two parts to be joined, then compressed between these two components to the corresponding groove creating a securely sealed joint. They can be used in dynamic joints where there is movement as well as in static or fixed applications.

    Types of gaskets and O-rings

Gaskets and O-rings come in various materials suited to different purposes. Some have a high-temperature tolerance for use in both hot and cold applications, while others are made to be chemically resistant for use in lab or test equipment. They are available in a wide range of sizes both in single size packs or in kits for general maintenance or when looking after a range of sealed parts to ensure the correct size is available.Gaskets and O-rings are typically made of elastomers like nitrile rubber and silicone, but they also come in plastics and other materials. This variety of material allows for specific gaskets and O-rings to be used to ensure the best fitting and most reliable seal.Sizes vary between types both in diameter and thickness, these variations help provide an exact and precise seal to protect the joint. Both Metric and Imperial sizes are available to replace new and old gaskets and O-rings whether maintaining modern parts or older machines, engines and other mechanical parts.
