Thermocouples
A thermocouple is a temperature sensor that generates a voltage signal based on the temperature difference between two different metals or alloys. It consists of two dissimilar metal wires joined together at one end, forming a junction. When this junction is exposed to a temperature gradient, it produces a small voltage (which is known as the measuring junction) that is proportional to the temperature difference. Types Of Thermocouples
There is a wide range of thermocouple types available, each with different characteristics such as temperature range and robustness. Each thermocouple is defined by a letter which refers to the type of materials used and indicates what temperature range they can be used in.
- Type K: Made from a combination of nickel-based wires and usable from -200 to 1260°C
- Type J: Made from iron and copper-nickel and usable from around 0°C to 816°C
- Type T: Made from copper-constantan alloy and usable from −200 to +350°C
- Type N: Made from nicrosil-nisil alloys and usable from -270 to +1300°C
