How does this NiMH battery differ from a NiCd one?

Nickel-metal hydride batteries use a hydrogen-absorbing alloy instead of NiCd batteries' cadmium. This expands the NiMH battery's capacity, making it suitable for providing high-drain devices with a longer life.

Are NiMH batteries environmentally friendly?

They are to a degree, as NiMH batteries contain no heavy metals that could leak into the environment. They're also recyclable at speciality centres, making them a more environmentally friendly choice than older NiCd models.
