Meet your ribbon-cable connection needs with this insulation displacement contact (IDC) socket from 3M. It's a handy component, designed to simplify the job of terminating your cables for maximum productivity. It has sharp contact points that pierce the insulation and make contact with the multiple wires inside the flattened cable. This quick termination solution eliminates the need to strip the shrouded wires. The female unit features 10 contacts across two rows and has a standard 2.54mm pitch.

What should I factor in when selecting my IDC?


First, think about the number of contacts you need – IDCs come with different numbers of pins or connections. Then, consider gender – IDCs can come in a male version (also known as a plug) or a female version (known as a socket or header). 3M 891 Series 2.54 x 2.54mm IDC Ribbon Cable Sockets


From 3M, the 891 Series ribbon cable connectors feature military polarization and centre bumps. They terminate faster than two-piece sockets and their sword packaging makes easy loading of manual and semi-automatic assembly equipment.

These 891 series IDC ribbon cable socket connectors have a double-recessed cover which allows cable to be terminated from either side and are supplied preassembled.
