From 3M, this welding helmet can offer eye, face and respiratory protection with a flip-up welding filter combined with a bump cap for extra head cover. For use with 3M™ Speedglas™ Welding Filter Series 9100 (sold separately).

For respiratory protection and excellent vision in a flip-up model with bump cap, get 3M™ Speedglas™ Welding Helmet 9100 MP-Lite with 3M™ Adflo™ Powered Air Respirator, 597700. It combines five levels of protection

head (bump cap), eye, face, respiratory and hearing (optional accessories). Our welding helmet has a flip-up welding filter design with a wide, clear 170 mm x 100 mm protective visor beneath, that’s excellent for precision grinding in low-light conditions.

The side windows (shade 5) can help widen your field of vision when wearing in the down position. The slim profile and ergonomic design make it even more lightweight and easier to get into tight welding spaces. It fits with 3M™ Speedglas™ Welding Filter Series 9100 (passive or auto-darkening), to be ordered separately and compatible with 3M™ PELTOR™ Earmuffs X-Series for optional hearing protection.

3M™ Adflo™ Powered Air Respirator comes with self-adjusting QRS breathing tube, prefilter, spark arrestor, particle filter, standard battery and charger. Filters for gas protection or odour filtration can be added as needed (sold separately). Each filter can be selectively without changing all filters at the same time.

Applications

Welding helmets, or welding hoods, are essential personal protection equipment wherever arc welding takes place. The helmet has advantages over goggles in that they also protect the face and neck from flash sparks, and can even serve as face protection PPE when grinding. The 3M™ Speedglas™ 9100 FX Air Welding Helmet is designed to be fitted with auto-darkening lenses.

Auto-darkening lenses have advantages over static polarized viewing lenses, in that you can see as normal when not welding without having to adjust your mask. The viewing lens only darkens in response to the light given off from arc welding. In many countries, an auto-darkening welding mask is an industry safety requirement wherever welding equipment is used, and they are regarded as a standard piece of safety equipment for welders.

What are the disadvantages of auto-darkening welding masks, compared with fixed-darkness masks?

There are two main types of welding mask- those that have a fixed-darkness viewing portal, and those that have an auto-darkening viewing portal. Fixed darkness usually have a flip-up face shield, so that you can see normally when you are not welding, and then nod your head to put the mask in place once you are ready to weld.

Auto-darkening helmets use a polarizing filter that automatically prevents harmful flash burn to the user. This has the advantage that the wearer does not have to adjust their helmet for working, saving them time and effort. As they do not need to be adjusted, they reduce the risk of exposure to harmful light.

The main disadvantage of a darkening welding helmet is that they are often more expensive than their fixed-darkness counterparts. It is important to choose the welding mask that is best suited to the job at hand.
