How does this Piezo buzzer create sound?

The core components of this piezo buzzer are the piezoelectric ceramic and a metal plate held together by a strong adhesive. The piezoelectric element is flexible and allows a current of up to 230V AC to pass through it which causes it to shrink and expand. The resulting vibration produces sound waves.
