From 3M, the 891 Series ribbon cable connectors feature military polarization and centre bumps. They terminate faster than two-piece sockets and their sword packaging makes easy loading of manual and semi-automatic assembly equipment.

These 891 series IDC ribbon cable socket connectors have a double-recessed cover which allows cable to be terminated from either side and are supplied preassembled.
Strain reliefs (192-7530 typically) are available separately

Features and Benefits

• Preassembled, terminates faster than two-piece sockets
• Sword packaging makes easy loading of manual and semi-automatic assembly equipment
• Bumps prevent premature latch locking during shipment
• Optional double-sided adhesive pull tab for easy unplugging
• Double-recessed cover for cable terminating from either side eliminates need for single-recessed cover connectors

Applications

Ribbon cables are known for their space saving and high data transfer capabilities. They are often used to connect internal computer peripherals, and less frequently for external connections. They are known for being well suited to mass termination with IDC (insulation displacement connectors.) This quick and practical termination solution means that ribbon cabling is a common standard in electronics and computing.

Why choose 3M?

3M are a reliable name in computing and electronic connection. Combined with RS Components excellent customer service, 3M provides a range of specialist connectivity solutions for a variety of industries and applications.

3M IDC Socket, 20 Way, 2 Row - 891 Series - 89120-0101HA

Quickly terminate ribbon cable with this insulation displacement connector (IDC) socket from 3M. The device features 20 contacts in two rows, so it houses plenty of connections for a range of electronic applications. The termination process consists of sharp contact points that are able to puncture the cable’s outer sheath and then make contact with multiple wires housed inside. There's no need for the process of stripping shrouded wires and you don't need any tools for this method.

• Pitch height of 2.54mm for standard use• Preassembled and ready to use• Unplugs easily with optional double-sided adhesive pull tab• Easy loading of manual and semi-automatic assembly equipment• Double-recessed cover for cable terminating from both sides, so no need for single-recessed cover connectors

Applications

• Telecommunications• Computer drives• Tablets

What are ribbon cables and what do you use them for?

Ribbon cables are made up of multiple insulated wires, which are arranged parallel to each other to form a flat ribbon. They transmit electrical signals and are often used to connect internal computer peripherals, and less often for external connections. They're popular because their flat, flexible structure makes them space-saving as well as able to transfer large amounts of data.
