The basic elements of fire safety as laid down in the Fire Precautions Act 1971and The Revised Proposal for the Fire Precautions (Places of Work) Regulations demand the provision of an adequate means of escape from all premises. The regulations also state that all fire exit safety signs must contain a symbol e.g. a running man. Supplementary text only signs (e.g. FIRE EXIT) can be included on a sign or used in conjuction with a symbol sign but cannot be used without a symbol.
