As the fast-paced and ‘always on’ mindset spreads globally, infrastructure development plays a crucial part in making that happen. This includes improving the infrastructure in established civilisations, but also in up-and-coming areas too.
Having a solid infrastructure is essential to the prosperity of many countries around the world, and impacts both our professional and personal lives. From improving transportation, energy or water infrastructure, these factors are what help to ensure that a country runs smoothly.
To analyse the locations around the world with the best infrastructure development, and identify those which are in need of improvement, we analysed global data to show the need to spend infrastructure gap on a worldwide scale. We have also identified the sectors that have the largest gap between need and spend, as well as which countries around the world have the biggest gap too.

Taking a look at the spend on infrastructure by sector, the data reveals that road transport has the largest spending gap, compared to airport transport which has the smallest. Mexico (53%) and Myanmar (50%) are at the top of the chart for countries with the largest spend vs need gap, whilst France, Japan, United States, India and China are all investing heavily in their infrastructure.
