Disposable Respirators

Disposable respirators are a piece of PPE (Personal Protective Equipment) that protects workers against airborne particles, like dust, powders and fine mists. It fits over the wearer’s nose and mouth to protect the wearer from inhalation of such particles that could cause respiratory issues, either in the short term or long term.

Disposable respirators have different FFP (Filtering Facepiece) classifications, dependant on the application they are being used for:

  • FFP1 – These respirators protect against low levels of dust, as well as solid and liquid aerosols. FFP1 masks are suitable for hand sanding, drilling and cutting, or for protection against materials in concentrations of up to 4x occupational exposure limit (OEL) or 4x assigned protection factor (APF).
  • FFP2 – Suitable for protection against moderate levels of dust, as well as solid and liquid aerosols. These FFP2 respirators can protect against materials in concentrations of up to 12x OEL or 4x APF, meaning these masks are ideal for plastering or sanding applications.
  • FFP3 – The highest level of classification that protects against higher levels of dust, and against solid and liquid aerosols. These masks can protect against materials in concentrations of up to 50x OEL or 20x APF, making them suitable for handling hazardous powders, like those found in the pharmaceutical industry.
  • Disposable respirators are generally single-use only meaning it is important to ensure that they safely filter out any particles, or they will not work. Each manufacturer will have a general guideline as to how long the respirator should last, so it is important to follow these guidelines and not re-use the respirator over the guidelines specified as it may not allow effective respiratory protection.

What are the benefits of a disposable respirator?

Aside from the fact that these respirators protect the user from inhalation of potentially harmful and damaging airborne particles like fine dust, liquid spray and fine mist, or powders, there are other benefits to disposable respirators:

  • Allergy-Free – Disposable respirators are generally made from a soft material that is suitable for use for those who are sensitive or allergic to certain materials, making them incredibly versatile
  • Protects against Pathogens – they can be used in the medical or research industry to protect those individuals who are regularly exposed to bacteria, viruses or other pathogens that could cause contamination or infection
  • Suitable for all face shapes – Disposable respirators are suitable for all face shapes and sizes and generally can be adjusted to ensure a secure seal is formed around the nose and mouth
