A desiccator is a sealed container or cabinet used to store and protect moisture-sensitive substances from humidity. Desiccators are typically made of glass or plastic and have an airtight seal to prevent the entry of moisture from the surrounding environment. Inside the desiccator, a desiccant material, such as silica gel, calcium chloride, or activated alumina, is placed at the bottom. The desiccant absorbs any moisture present in the air inside the desiccator, creating a low-humidity environment. This helps to prevent moisture-related degradation, reactions, or changes in the stored substances.

Desiccant Types

• Silica Gel - Silica gel is a porous, granular form of silicon dioxide, commonly used as a desiccant. It has a high affinity for water molecules and can absorb moisture from the surrounding environment. Silica gel is known for its ability to maintain a low relative humidity (RH) level in sealed environments. Silica gel is often found in small packets or sachets made of breathable material, such as paper or fabric. These packets are commonly included in product packaging to protect goods from moisture damage during storage or transport. Silica gel can also be used in containers or storage units to maintain a dry environment for sensitive items like electronics.
• Indicating Silica Gels - Indicator gel beads change colour when saturated, ideal for visual monitoring.
• Humidity Indicators – These come in various forms such as Plugs and Labels and are often used alongside desiccants to monitor relative humidity levels, the indicators change colour when moisture is detected.
• Molecular Sieves - Effective in low-humidity or high-precision environments such as in laboratory use, gas drying, and refrigerant systems.
