SMD LEDs or surface mount device LEDs are used in surface mount technology (SMT) applications. Surface mounting involves mounting the LED on the surface of a printed circuit board (PCB) rather than through holes in the PCB (through hole mounting). SMD LEDs are available in many form factors or package types which indicate their dimensions. The advantages of SMD LEDs are that they are low profile, compact and occupy less space on the PCB than a through hole version. SMD LEDs can be mounted automatically using special pick-and-place equipment allowing cost effective production and they also have an enhanced heat dissipation capability resulting in increased reliability.
