Got a screw that's stuck? These tips from the professionals can help!
There’s nothing more annoying than a screw that can't be undone bringing the job to a halt. As understandable as the urge may be to use excessive force, don’t overdo it! A screw that is stuck can rarely be removed using force. Quite the opposite: you might end up with an even bigger problem, such as a sheared or twisted screw head. Fortunately, proven methods exist for loosening stubborn fasteners. We’ll share them with you here!
Torque-angle tightening
Simple torque-based assembly is a widely used process in the production of bolted joints. However, where requirements are more stringent, torque-angle tightening is often used. The fastener is tightened through a prescribed angle after the snug point or threshold has been reached by torqueing. The ideal snug point torque and the angle of rotation for the respective connection are calculated individually and exactly before assembly, so that they can be applied repeatedly and consistently.
Caution in the event of preload force losses!
Creating a permanent and secure connection – this goal is common to all bolted connections. To achieve it, a specific mounting preload force must be obtained when tightening the screw. In this article you can find out why the loss of preload force should be taken into account and what the type and condition of the screw have to do with it!
What you need to know about the extension and the point of application of force?
The use of a torque wrench is advisable wherever a joint requires tightening to a specified torque. If the torque wrench is correctly set, it trips when that torque is reached and displays the correct torque value. This is an important basic prerequisite to achieve the correct target torque. But that alone is sometimes not enough: another crucial aspect is adherence to the extension, which can vary from one torque wrench to the next.
