FAQ

Does DVI-D to HDMI carry audio?

No, DVI to HDMI connections do not produce sound. We recommend StarTech's 10ft (3m) Slim 3.5mm Stereo Audio Cable (176-5729) as a perfect pairing with this cable.

How do HDMI cables work?

HDMI stands for High Definition Multimedia Interface and works by using TDMS (transition-minimized differential signalling). TDMS encodes the signal being transmitted, which protects information from degrading as it travels along the cable from one place to another. One of the many wires carries the signal itself and another wire carries the inverse. Once the signals have reached the TV, the TV decodes the signal. Then, using the difference between the original signal and the inverse, the TV compensates for any loss of information that may have happened along the way.

Is there any difference between HDMI cables?

There are many versions of HDMI since it was commercially launched in 2003. Each revision normally adds support for specific devices and includes new features. For example, the very first version (1.0) could transfer data at 4.95Gbps, while the newer (2.0) iteration can transfer data up to 18Gbps. This, amongst other features.

When Should I use a longer video cable vs. a video extender?

You should only use video converters and extenders if it is necessary to do so. In many cases, most video converters and extenders are not necessary if you purchase the correct cable.

The following table lists the maximum length of cable for common video standards.

• DisplayPort - 50 ft. (15.2m)
• HDMI - 50 ft. (15.2m)
• DVI - 50 ft. (15.2m)
• VGA - 200 ft. (71m)
