There are an estimated 3.9 billion internet users around the world, and with many users holding one or more accounts across some of the most popular platforms such as Facebook, Instagram and Twitter. Facebook holds 1.5 billion active users each day, and also owns other highly used social media sites and apps, including Instagram and WhatsApp, but how many acquisitions does Facebook have in total? And how do other social media companies compare?

Technology and social media companies are some of the richest in the world, and operating in such a competitive market means that many tech and social companies often acquire one another.

Facebook has made a number of acquisitions over the years with some of its most notable including purchasing WhatsApp in 2014 for $22 billion and Instagram for $1 billion in 2012, leading some to debate as to which was the most beneficial for Facebook.

With Facebook often dominating the headlines when they acquire another company, there are a number of other social platforms who have also gone on to complete a number of acquisitions with Weibo reportedly raising a total of $700 million to fund acquisitions.

Other high profile social media acquisitions include Google purchasing YouTube in 2006 for $1.65 billion. At the time of purchase, YouTube was unprofitable and it was one of the biggest purchases for Google.

Twitter also purchased the video app Vine for $970 million, and although the Vine app is no longer operational, at the time it revolutionised video sharing to social media with short, 6-second clips uploaded to social media starts rather than longer form videos.
