9 facts you never knew about these iconic superbike racetracks

The Bennetts British Superbike Championships 2021 (BSB) is one of the greatest domestic Superbike series in the World. It brings together some of the best talents in the sport today, many will move on to World Superbikes and MotoGP.

The championship visits some iconic tracks. These include Brands Hatch, Donington Park and Silverstone. Here are 9 interesting facts you might not know about these famous racetracks:


1. The Silverstone circuit is on the site of a World War II Royal Air Force bomber station


2. Silverstone was first used for motorsport in an impromptu race in September 1947. Twelve drivers raced over a two-mile circuit. One ran over and killed a sheep and his car was written off. This informal race became known as the Mutton Grand Prix


3. Silverstone’s superbike race circuit is 1.604 miles long. It features two left-hand and four righthand corners.


4. The superbike lap record at Silverstone is 54.109 seconds and is held by Jake Dixon on a Kawasaki in 2018


5. Silverstone has held a round of British Superbike Championships every year since 1998. The 44 races have seen 21 different winners and 35 different podium finishers.


6. Donington Park was created as a racing circuit during the period between the first and second World Wars. It was used as a military vehicle storage depot during the second World War.


7. Donington Park has hosted at least one round of the British Superbike Championship every year since the introductory season in 1996. The exception being in 2010, when no round was held. That’s 63 races with 21 different race winners and 44 different riders on the podium.


8. Brands Hatch has hosted the final round of the BSB Championships on ten occasions since 1996


9. The quickest ever lap recorded at Brands Hatch was 1 minute 24.838 seconds by Shane Byrne in 2016
