Calipers

Calipers are an extremely popular measuring device because they are highly accurate with little margin for error when measuring length or the distance between two sides of an object. You can use calipers in many different fields, from mechanical engineering to medicine and science to metalworking.

Features:
Calipers have a robust construction, and are most commonly made from stainless steel. Some feature an anti-glare, or satin finish that makes measurements easier to read.
There are a several different configurations available. Some calipers will only allow for measurement of the inside or outside, depth or step of a product. However, many do give the option of measuring all of these. Calipers can display measurements in both imperial and metric.

Key Types of Caliper:
  • Vernier Calipers – These are particularly useful when you need to measure something round. The measuring jaws can be clamped on either side of the object. They feature a fixed main scale and a moving Vernier scale. The main scale is normally in tenths of an inch or millimetres while the Vernier scale normally measures to the nearest 0.02 millimetres or 0.001 inches. You may see reference to the Vernier reading or ’resolution’ on the caliper itself. This refers to the smallest distance that the caliper can measure and can normally be found at the end of the scale. Vernier calipers are the most traditional type available.
  • Dial Calipers – These provide measurements with the same level of accuracy as Vernier calipers. However, instead of using two scales, a dial is used to read the final fraction of an inch or a millimetre on a dial. The measurement taken on a dial caliper is very easy to read.
  • Digital Calipers - Harnessing technology, digital calipers use linear encoders to measure distance. This is then shown on a digital display. Digital calipers are incredibly easy to use and to read. Many allow you to switch between imperial and metric at the touch of a button and can now be paired with other electronic devices to share the readings.

Calibration:
You should regularly check the calibration of your calipers to ensure they are working correctly and are delivering accurate measurements.
