Mild steel is defined as steel that contains a relatively low percentage of carbon, and is thus more accurately referred to as ’low-carbon steel’. The required range of carbon content for a product to classify as mild steel is between 0.05-0.25%, whereas other higher-carbon steels (which is harder, and therefore more often used for knives and cutting tools) can contain up to 2% carbon.
