Magnetic Pick-ups

Magnetic Pick-Ups

Miniature magnetic ’pick-up’ transducers suitable for use in a wide range of sensing applications. Each device responds to movement of ferrous parts past the pole on the end of the unit. Used extensively in areas such as speed regulation of motors, when sensing for example, the teeth on a gear wheel. However, magnetic pick-ups may be used to implement feedback and control functions in many fields. Automotive applications include crank angle sensing, ignition timing, anti-skid systems and diagnostics. Applications in the computer peripherals area encompass disc drives, line printers, card punches/readers and printer terminals. The diagrams indicate the two basic modes of using these components. Note especially their small size in relation to their high signal output, enabling their deployment where many conventional sensors cannot be fitted. Fully encapsulated construction for reliable operation, but not intended for immersion in liquids.

Overview

Gear Tooth Sensor

1GT1 Series Gear Tooth Sensors use a magnetically biased Hall effect integrated circuit to accurately sense movement of ferrous metal targets. This specially designed I.C., with discrete capacitor and bias magnet, is sealed in a probe type package for physical protection.

  • Digital current sinking output (open collector)
Better signal-to-noise ratio than variable reluctance sensors, excellent low speed performance, output amplitude not dependent on RPM
Sensor electronically self-adjusts to slight variations in runout and variations in temperature, simplifying installation and maintenance
Fast operating speed – over 100 kHz
Reverse polarity protection and protection against pulsed transients to +60V/+40V
Excellent signal-to-noise ratio and low speed performance
    EMI resistance
    Supplied with manufacturers instruction sheet
Applications include: Camshaft and crankshaft speed/position, Transmission speed, Tachometers, Counters, Anti-skid/traction control, Sprocket speed, Chain link conveyor speed distance, Stop motion detector
All values measured with 1KΩ pull-up resistor
